The research identifies at least 22 different "to cut" verbs and associated phrases, as well as extensive descriptions of their meanings and variances. Nida's componential analysis method was employed in this study, which is a qualitative descriptive method that collects data using dictionaries and glossaries. According to the research findings, there are significant differences in meaning between the various cutting verbs, which can be attributed to factors such as the purpose of the action, the tools used, the tool's position, the object being cut, the size and shape of the result, and the thickness of the cutting result. The study also discovered that while the term "to chop" is the most widely used verb when discussing a cutting action, it lacks any distinguishing properties when compared to other cutting verbs that may be employed instead.
2023-11-01T00:00:00+07:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement## https://ejournal.uinsatu.ac.id/index.php/ls/article/view/7599 DIGITAL MULTI-SENSORY APPROACHES IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING: A CASE STUDY OF MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS IN CIREBON 2024-01-05T12:45:36+07:00 Koniah Koniah [email protected] Lala Bumela Sudimantara [email protected] Listiana Ikawati [email protected]
The decline in the English Proficiency Index (EPI) in Indonesia raises concerns about the outdated ELT pedagogy in Indonesia. This study aims to determine a learning approach using digital learning resources with an innovative multi-sensory approach for grade 8 students by utilizing selected stories from Aesop's Fables which are curated based on the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) level. This study employs a differentiated learning, student-centered approach to learning and uses reading for emotions as a learning tool to facilitate critical and reflective thinking. Based on the work of Lian (2017) and Sudimantara (2021), this study used a multi-sensory load reduction strategy by utilizing nonverbal elements such as rhythm, intonation, movement, emotion, and aesthetics. The research findings show that utilizing digital multi sensory English learning is a practical and diverse method of teaching narrative texts. Innovative learning resources foster students' enthusiasm for learning and enhance their academic engagement and performance. However, the study revealed that teachers are still hesitant to adopt this new approach and continue to rely on traditional teaching methods, while students are increasingly eager to explore new and innovative ways of learning. This study emphasizes the importance of embracing innovative learning strategies to improve the quality of education in Indonesia and equip students with the skills necessary to succeed in today's interconnected world.
2023-11-04T00:00:00+07:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement## https://ejournal.uinsatu.ac.id/index.php/ls/article/view/8022 BEST PRACTICE OF TOEIC LISTENING COURSE ADULT LERNERS AT ENGLISH INSTITUTE IN PARE KEDIRI 2024-01-05T18:42:39+07:00 Muhammad Azizin [email protected] Sri Wahyuni [email protected]
Concerns of job applicants have in meeting the requirements for the test of English International Communication (TOEIC). The results of observations, interviews, and documentation, as well as interviews with teachers that the teaching and learning process in the classroom has been going well, but some things, such as lesson plans, are not used in the listening for TOEIC program. In the teaching and learning process, the teacher prepares the material well and explains the material using the drilling method to increase the student's grades weekly. Furthermore, the evaluation carried out on listening for TOEIC is to take students' scores on the test simulation every week, and the teacher will evaluate it by discussion after the simulation test if the students do not have an increase in the TOEIC score. The results of this study are a beneficial reference for other institutions in implementing TOEIC listening preparation. Students can use them to improve their scores in understanding the topic of discussion. Further research may be needed to explore Reading comprehension to complement best practices in the test of English international communication.
2023-11-16T00:00:00+07:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement## https://ejournal.uinsatu.ac.id/index.php/ls/article/view/8356 NON-OBSERVANCE OF MAXIMS AND THE IMPLICATURE IN SHANG-CHI MOVIE 2024-01-05T12:47:00+07:00 Medlin Bulain [email protected] Yulius Kurniawan [email protected] Endar Rachmawaty Linuwih [email protected]
Being fluent in a particular language is beneficial for everyone in many aspects. The conversation is beyond just being fluent in languages. According to Grice (1975), the effectiveness of conversation relies on the cooperative principle, which involves participants making efforts to contribute relevant and informative messages and it is essential. However, the speaker often does not fulfill the maxim in conversation whether it is consciously or unconsciously due to various factors. This study aims to investigate the non-observance of maxim and the implicature in Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings movie. According to Grice (1975), there are 4 types of non-observance of maxims: flouting, violating, opting out, and infringing the maxim. Thomas (2013) proposed another type of non-observance of the maxim which is suspending the maxim. Moreover, the non-observance of the maxims is result in implicature. This research is analysed by using the qualitative descriptive design. The data of this research is the utterances of the characters. The result of this research shows that the characters do not observe the maxim by dominantly flouting the maxim with 24 occurrences, then followed by violating the maxim with 12 occurrences, opting out with 5 times occurrences, and the last one is infringing the maxim with 4 times occurrences. The characters use implicature often to get what they want without looking desperate to get it, protect their ego, be polite in expressing their opinion and desire, emphasize a point without appearing impolite or assertive, and skilfully guide others to believe what they said and command other through indirect suggestions.
2023-11-21T00:00:00+07:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement## https://ejournal.uinsatu.ac.id/index.php/ls/article/view/8486 ATTITUDINAL LANGUAGES USED IN INDONESIA’S CHILDFREE DISCOURSE: APPRAISAL ANALYSIS 2024-01-05T12:47:16+07:00 Mudhiah Umamah [email protected] Hayatul Cholsy [email protected]
The emergence of a modern lifestyle called 'childfree' goes against the traditional principles and culture of Indonesian society. Practically, this paradigm has led to both positive and negative views from the society. This study aims to identify the attitudinal languages towards childfree discourse through analysing the appraising items as language evaluation. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method. Data collection was carried out by corpus analysis with the help of the UAM Corpus tool. A total of 30 childfree articles on the internet were manually annotated based on Martin and White's (2005) appraisal scheme. Data analysis will be carried out descriptively by interpreting the annotation results on the corpus tool. The annotation results show that 458 lexical choices are categorised into attitude with 306 appreciations, 105 affects, and 47 judgements. From the total number of attitudes, 304 items showed negative attitudes, 135 positive attitudes, and 19 neutral attitudes. Overall, the appraising items on the 30 childfree discourses in Indonesia were varied. Some discourses have many positive evaluations. However, discourses that construct childfree as negative are more common. In addition to the construction of negative views, the authors also tend to avoid subjectivity by presenting sources of language evaluations from outside of the author.
2023-11-10T00:00:00+07:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement## https://ejournal.uinsatu.ac.id/index.php/ls/article/view/8519 EXPLORING EFL STUDENT’S LITERACY PRACTICES IN THE ERA OF ONLINE LEARNING 2024-01-05T12:46:17+07:00 Arina Shofiya [email protected] Nanik Sri Rahayu [email protected]
The shift of learning mode from offline to online as the effect of Pandemic Covid -19 provides more experience about literacy to EFL students. Consequently, the students must have sufficient motivation to concentrate in English class. If not, demotivation emerges and becomes a factor of unsuccessful learning. In relation to demotivation, this research investigates: [1] the factors contributing to the demotivation among students at the Islamic Boarding School of Tremas Pacitan in learning English and [2] the strategies used by students at the Islamic Boarding School of Tremas Pacitan to minimize demotivation in learning English. This research used a descriptive qualitative approach. The subjects of the research were 8B students of the Islamic Boarding School of Tremas Pacitan. The data were collected by conducting observation and doing an interview. The findings revealed that the factors causing learning demotivation that were divided into intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Intrinsic factors had found personal belief and students’ boredom, while extrinsic factors such as teaching methods; classroom conditions; and less adequate facilities. Knowing that, extrinsic factors are more arisen than intrinsic factors. Moreover, students’ strategies to minimize learning demotivation were such as self-studying; asking friends for help; and ignoring their humiliating classmates. It is recommended that English teachers need to improve learning methods and facilities that support learning English.
2023-11-03T00:00:00+07:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement##
