Reversible thinking is an important cognitive skill that students need to master in order to solve mathematical problems comprehensively, both forward and backward. This descriptive qualitative study aims to analyze students’ reversible thinking skills regarding flat-sided three-dimensional shapes. The research subjects were 21 students selected using total sampling. Data were collected through a test of reversible thinking ability and then analyzed descriptively through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results showed that in the forward process, students successfully applied the aspect of negation by calculating the surface area and the aspect of reciprocity by expressing a 30% increase as an addition to the original edge length. In the backward process, students successfully reversed the relationship between area and cost per square meter, utilizing the equivalence of the areas of the four walls, and then returned to the initial data regarding the height of the hall’s walls. However, the majority of students still failed to solve the problem in the backward process. This condition is related to weak mathematical reasoning, conceptual understanding, and students’ reluctance to actively engage in learning. This study recommends the implementation of learning strategies that explicitly train students’ reversible thinking processes.
