Generative AI Policy

Martabat: Jurnal Perempuan dan Anak recognizes the potential benefits of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in scholarly communication while acknowledging risks related to research integrity, authorship, confidentiality, privacy, transparency, and accountability. This policy is informed by the principles of the STM Association and the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

Acceptable Use and Author Responsibility

Authors may use GenAI for limited technical assistance, including grammar correction, language polishing, formatting, translation support, and reference organization. Such limited use does not require detailed disclosure when it does not substantially affect the intellectual content, analysis, interpretation, or scholarly contribution of the manuscript.

Substantive AI use must be disclosed. This includes AI assistance in generating substantial text, synthesizing literature, translating research data, coding or analyzing qualitative data, developing research instruments, generating figures, or contributing to interpretation and conceptual development.

AI tools must not be listed as authors. Human authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, citations, ethical compliance, interpretation, and integrity of all submitted content.

GenAI must not be used to fabricate or manipulate participants, interviews, quotations, observations, references, consent, research data, images, findings, or other scholarly evidence.

AI Use in Gender and Child Research

Research involving women, children, survivors of violence, families, or other potentially vulnerable participants requires particular care.

Authors must not upload confidential or identifiable research data to public GenAI platforms. This includes interview transcripts, participant identities, information about children, photographs, audio or video recordings, case records, psychological information, family data, institutional documents, or information related to violence, abuse, discrimination, or other sensitive experiences.

When AI assists with transcription, translation, coding, summarization, or interpretation, authors must ensure that participants' voices, gender experiences, cultural contexts, identities, and sensitive narratives are represented accurately and respectfully.

AI must not be used to reconstruct, invent, or sensationalize testimonies of violence, abuse, trauma, discrimination, or other sensitive experiences.

Research involving children must give particular attention to privacy, informed consent or assent, safeguarding, and protection from potential harm or identification.

Disclosure of AI Use

Substantive AI use should be disclosed in the manuscript, preferably before the References section.

The authors used [AI tool and provider] for [specific purpose]. All AI-assisted content was reviewed, verified, and revised by the authors, who remain fully responsible for the accuracy and integrity of the manuscript.

If no substantive AI was used:

The authors did not use generative AI tools for substantive content generation, data analysis, interpretation, or scholarly argumentation.

Failure to disclose significant AI use may be treated as a publication-ethics concern.

Editorial and Peer Review Use

Editors and reviewers must protect manuscript confidentiality. Unpublished manuscripts, reviewer reports, author responses, participant information, research data, and supplementary materials must not be uploaded to public GenAI platforms.

GenAI must not replace editors or peer reviewers in manuscript evaluation or publication decisions. Reviewers must not upload confidential manuscripts to public AI platforms to generate review reports.

All editorial decisions remain the responsibility of human editors.

Misuse and Editorial Action

Inappropriate AI use includes fabricated references, participants, quotations or findings; invented testimonies; manipulation of sensitive narratives; misleading AI-generated images; inaccurate translation of participant voices; plagiarism concealed through AI-assisted paraphrasing; undisclosed substantive AI use; and unauthorized disclosure of confidential or identifiable data.

Where misuse is suspected, Martabat: Jurnal Perempuan dan Anak may request clarification, original data, research instruments, ethical documentation, AI-use disclosure, or other supporting evidence.

Depending on the severity, the journal may require revision, reject the manuscript, publish a correction, issue an expression of concern, or retract the article in accordance with its Publication Ethics and Research Integrity Policy.

Policy Review

Martabat: Jurnal Perempuan dan Anak will periodically review this policy in response to developments in generative AI, research ethics, participant protection, data privacy, and scholarly publishing standards.

Through this policy, the journal affirms its commitment to responsible AI use, transparency, human accountability, participant protection, gender-sensitive research, child safeguarding, and scholarly integrity.
