Gen-AI Policy

Ta'allum: Jurnal Pendidikan Islam recognizes the potential benefits of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in scholarly communication while acknowledging risks related to research integrity, authorship, confidentiality, transparency, and accountability. This policy follows the principles of the STM Association and the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

Acceptable Use and Author Responsibility

Authors may use GenAI for limited technical assistance, such as grammar correction, language polishing, formatting, translation support, and reference organization. Limited use that does not affect the intellectual content of the manuscript does not require detailed disclosure.

Substantive AI use must be disclosed. This includes AI assistance in generating substantial text, literature synthesis, data analysis or coding, research instruments, figures, translation of research data, interpretation, or development of the manuscript’s conceptual structure.

AI tools must not be listed as authors. Human authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, citations, interpretation, ethical compliance, and integrity of all submitted content.

GenAI must not be used to fabricate or manipulate data, participants, interviews, observations, quotations, references, ethical approval, informed consent, research findings, or scholarly evidence.

AI Use in Islamic Education Research

Authors must not upload confidential or identifiable research data to public AI platforms, including interview transcripts, student or teacher information, classroom observations, institutional documents, photographs, recordings, or other sensitive research materials.

Particular care is required when research involves children, students, madrasahs, pesantren, Islamic schools, or religious communities.

When AI assists with translation, coding, or interpretation, authors must ensure that participant voices, cultural contexts, Arabic terminology, Qur'anic verses, Hadith, and other Islamic sources are represented accurately and verified against reliable sources.

Disclosure of AI Use

Substantive AI use should be disclosed in the manuscript, preferably before the References section.

Example:

The authors used [AI tool and provider] for [specific purpose]. All AI-assisted content was reviewed, verified, and revised by the authors, who remain fully responsible for the integrity of the manuscript.

If no substantive AI was used:

The authors did not use generative AI tools for substantive content generation, data analysis, interpretation, or scholarly argumentation.

Failure to disclose significant AI use may be treated as a publication-ethics concern.

Editorial and Peer Review Use

Editors and reviewers must protect manuscript confidentiality. Unpublished manuscripts, reviewer reports, research data, author responses, and supplementary materials must not be uploaded to public GenAI platforms.

AI must not replace editors or peer reviewers in evaluating manuscripts or making publication decisions. All editorial decisions remain the responsibility of human editors.

Reviewers must not use public GenAI tools to generate reviews from confidential manuscripts. They remain responsible for the originality, fairness, accuracy, and confidentiality of their reports.

Misuse and Editorial Action

Inappropriate AI use includes fabricated references or data, false quotations, manipulated findings, misleading AI-generated images, inaccurate translation, plagiarism concealed through AI paraphrasing, undisclosed substantive AI use, or unauthorized disclosure of confidential research materials.

Where misuse is suspected, Ta'allum: Jurnal Pendidikan Islam may request clarification, original data, research instruments, AI-use disclosure, or other supporting evidence.

Depending on the severity, the journal may require revision, reject the manuscript, publish a correction, issue an expression of concern, or retract the article in accordance with its Publication Ethics and Research Integrity Policy.

Policy Review

Ta'allum: Jurnal Pendidikan Islam will periodically review this policy in response to developments in generative AI, research ethics, data protection, and scholarly publishing standards.

Through this policy, the journal affirms its commitment to responsible AI use, transparency, human accountability, participant protection, and research integrity in Islamic education.
