Abstract

Purpose – The Mystery Box phenomenon on digital platforms such as Shopee and TikTok Shop reflects a shift in consumer behavior toward speculative and entertainment-oriented patterns. This study aims to analyze Mystery Box transactions from the perspective of fiqh muamalah and explore their relevance as contextual learning material in Islamic education.

Methods – This study adopts a qualitative approach using library research. Data were collected from classical and contemporary fiqh literature, DSN-MUI fatwas, and scholarly works related to Islamic economic ethics. The analysis was carried out using content analysis with an inductive thematic approach.

Findings – The results show that Mystery Box transactions contain elements of gharar fahish and maisir due to ambiguity of the contractual object and an imbalance of benefits between buyer and seller, rendering them invalid under fiqh muamalah. However, this phenomenon can serve as a contextual medium to instill Islamic values such as honesty (shiddiq), prudence (iḥtiyāṭ), and responsibility (mas’ūliyyah) in Islamic Religious Education (PAI).

Limitations – The research is limited to descriptive qualitative analysis and focuses on two digital platforms. Further research may apply quantitative or comparative approaches to explore the socio-ethical impacts of digital consumer behavior in a broader Muslim context.

Value – This study contributes an interdisciplinary perspective connecting Islamic jurisprudence, digital economics, and education. It highlights the pedagogical potential of integrating real-world phenomena like the Mystery Box into PAI learning to develop Shariah-compliant consumer ethics and digital muamalah literacy among students.
