Abstract

This study is motivated by the low level of students’ productive language skills compared to their receptive skills in Indonesian language learning. This study aims to analyze students’ learning styles (visual, auditory, and kinesthetic) and their relevance to Indonesian language proficiency. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach conducted at SMPN 2 Takalar with a total of 32 ninth-grade students as the subjects. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing using triangulation techniques. The results show that most of the 32 students tend to have visual and auditory learning styles, while only a small proportion demonstrate kinesthetic tendencies. In terms of language skills, most students are categorized as good in listening and reading, but still low in speaking and writing. The findings also reveal that the learning process is still dominated by lecture-based methods with limited use of instructional media, so students have limited opportunities to develop productive skills. This study concludes that learning styles do not directly determine language proficiency, but are influenced by the instructional strategies applied. Therefore, more varied and participatory learning is needed to develop students’ language skills in a balanced manner.
