Abstract
This study aims to examine the types of phonological errors found in the speech of seventh-grade students and to identify the factors causing these errors. This study employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive research design. The research data were obtained from 25 seventh-grade students. The data collection techniques included tapping techniques, tests, interviews, and documentation. To ensure data validity, the study applied three types of triangulation, namely source triangulation, technique triangulation, and time triangulation. The data analysis process consisted of recording and transcribing data, understanding the data, analyzing the data, reducing the data, and drawing conclusions. The research procedure was conducted through several stages, including preparation, data collection, data processing, data analysis, and presentation of the findings. The results of the study revealed three types of phonological errors: phoneme substitution, phoneme addition, and phoneme omission. There were 50 cases of phoneme substitution, with the phoneme /e/ being the most frequently substituted phoneme among seventh-grade students. In addition, 40 cases of phoneme addition were identified, with the phoneme /g/ appearing most frequently. The study also found 24 cases of phoneme omission, in which the phoneme /g/ was the most frequently omitted phoneme. The factors contributing to phonological errors in the students’ speech were influenced by their first language or mother tongue, the frequent use of the regional language in daily communication, and the limited use of Indonesian in everyday interactions.
