Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) Policy

Jurnal Bahasa Lingua Scientia (JBLS) recognizes the benefits of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) for scholarly communication and language-related research while acknowledging risks concerning research integrity, authorship, confidentiality, intellectual property, transparency, and accountability. This policy is informed by the principles of the STM Association and the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

Acceptable Use and Author Responsibility

Authors may use GenAI for limited technical assistance, including grammar correction, language polishing, formatting, translation support, and reference organization. Such limited use does not require detailed disclosure when it does not substantially affect the intellectual content, analysis, interpretation, or scholarly contribution of the manuscript.

Substantive AI use must be disclosed. This includes using AI to generate or substantially revise text, synthesize literature, translate research data, assist corpus analysis, transcription, coding or annotation, develop research instruments, generate figures, or contribute to data interpretation and conceptual development.

AI tools must not be listed as authors. Human authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, citations, interpretations, ethical compliance, and integrity of all submitted content.

GenAI must not be used to fabricate or manipulate research data, linguistic examples, participants, interviews, quotations, literary sources, references, translations, findings, or other scholarly evidence.

AI in Language, Linguistics, Literature, and Language Education Research

JBLS recognizes GenAI and related technologies as legitimate subjects of scholarly investigation within the journal’s scope. Research examining AI-assisted language learning, translation, writing, linguistic analysis, digital literacy, or related areas is welcome when conducted with appropriate methodological and ethical rigor.

Authors must not upload confidential or identifiable participant data, interview transcripts, classroom records, unpublished literary materials, copyrighted corpora, or other sensitive research materials to public AI platforms without appropriate authorization and data protection.

When AI assists with translation, transcription, corpus analysis, linguistic annotation, or interpretation, authors must verify that linguistic meaning, cultural context, participant voices, and textual evidence are represented accurately.

Disclosure of AI Use

Substantive AI use should be disclosed in the manuscript, preferably before the References section.

The authors used [AI tool and provider] for [specific purpose]. All AI-assisted content was reviewed, verified, and revised by the authors, who remain fully responsible for the accuracy and integrity of the manuscript.

If no substantive AI was used:

The authors did not use generative AI tools for substantive content generation, data analysis, interpretation, or scholarly argumentation.

Failure to disclose significant AI use may be treated as a publication-ethics concern.

Editorial and Peer Review Use

Editors and reviewers must maintain manuscript confidentiality. Unpublished manuscripts, review reports, research data, author responses, and supplementary materials must not be uploaded to public GenAI platforms.

GenAI must not replace editors or reviewers in manuscript evaluation or publication decisions. Reviewers must not upload confidential manuscripts to public AI platforms to generate review reports. All editorial decisions remain the responsibility of human editors.

Misuse and Editorial Action

Inappropriate AI use includes fabricated references or quotations, invented or manipulated data, inaccurate AI-generated translations, misleading images or linguistic evidence, plagiarism concealed through AI-assisted paraphrasing, undisclosed substantive AI use, and unauthorized disclosure of confidential research materials.

Where misuse is suspected, JBLS may request clarification, original data, research instruments, AI-use disclosure, or other supporting evidence. Depending on the severity, the journal may require revision, reject the manuscript, publish a correction, issue an expression of concern, or retract the article in accordance with its Publication Ethics and Research Integrity Policy.

Policy Review

Jurnal Bahasa Lingua Scientia (JBLS) will periodically review this policy in response to developments in generative AI, language technologies, research ethics, data protection, and scholarly publishing standards.

Through this policy, JBLS affirms its commitment to responsible innovation, transparency, human accountability, research integrity, and ethical scholarship in language, linguistics, literature, and language education.
