Author Guidelines

Ar Rehla: Journal of Islamic Tourism, Halal Food, Islamic Traveling, and Creative Economy is a peer-reviewed scholarly journal dedicated to publishing original research and academic studies in Islamic tourism, the halal industry, Islamic travel, and the creative economy.

Ar Rehla welcomes scholarly contributions from lecturers, researchers, students, practitioners, and other individuals engaged in relevant academic and professional fields. The journal seeks manuscripts that demonstrate originality, methodological rigour, academic relevance, and meaningful contributions to the advancement of knowledge.

The journal focuses on nine areas of scholarly research: Islamic Tourism, Halal Tourism, Halal Food, Halal Culinary, Halal Industry, Islamic Traveling, Hajj and Umrah, Islamic Heritage Tourism, and Creative Economy.

All prospective authors are required to read and comply with the following guidelines before submitting their manuscripts through the journal's Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform.

1. General Manuscript Requirements

All manuscripts submitted to Ar Rehla must meet the following requirements:

  1. The manuscript must be an original scholarly work that has not been previously published and is not under consideration for publication elsewhere.

  2. The topic and research content must fall within the journal's stated focus and scope.

  3. The manuscript must present a clearly defined research problem, sound academic arguments, an appropriate research methodology, and a meaningful scholarly contribution.

  4. Manuscripts must be written in clear, accurate, and professional academic language. Articles may be submitted in English or Indonesian, following the journal's applicable manuscript template and language requirements.

  5. The expected manuscript length is 3,000–6,000 words, excluding references. Manuscripts exceeding this limit may be considered when authors provide an appropriate academic justification to the editor.

  6. Authors must prepare their manuscripts using the official Ar Rehla article template.

  7. All listed authors must have made substantial scholarly contributions and must approve the submission and final version of the manuscript.

  8. Authors are responsible for the accuracy and reliability of the research data, analysis, citations, references, and all scholarly content presented in the manuscript.

  9. Manuscripts must comply with the journal's publication ethics, copyright provisions, and relevant research integrity requirements.

  10. Authors must ensure that the manuscript is complete, appropriately formatted, and accompanied by all required information before submission.

Manuscripts that do not meet these requirements may be returned for correction or rejected during the initial editorial screening.

2. Types of Manuscripts

Ar Rehla primarily considers scholarly manuscripts that make an original contribution to the journal's areas of interest.

a. Original Research Articles

Original research articles present new research findings obtained through recognised scientific approaches, including quantitative research, qualitative research, mixed-methods research, case studies, comparative studies, and other appropriate research designs.

Research articles should clearly explain the research objectives, methodology, findings, discussion, and contributions to existing knowledge.

b. Research-Based Review Articles

Research-based review articles critically examine and synthesise existing scholarly literature to provide new insights, identify research gaps, or advance theoretical and conceptual understanding.

Relevant approaches may include systematic literature reviews, bibliometric analysis, scoping reviews, and structured critical reviews.

Review manuscripts must demonstrate a transparent methodology, systematic analysis, critical interpretation, and identifiable scholarly contributions. Articles consisting solely of descriptive summaries of previous studies are not sufficient.

All manuscript types remain subject to editorial assessment and the journal's applicable article policies.

3. Manuscript Structure and Organisation

All submitted manuscripts must follow the formatting and organisational requirements provided in the official Ar Rehla article template.

The main components of a scholarly manuscript are described below.

a. Article Title

The article title must be concise, informative, specific, and representative of the main research topic.

Authors should avoid unnecessarily long titles, ambiguous terminology, and abbreviations that may reduce clarity.

The title must accurately reflect the manuscript's research focus and scholarly contribution.

b. Author Information and Institutional Affiliations

Author information must include each author's full name, institutional affiliation, and valid email address.

All author information must be accurate and consistent with the metadata entered into the OJS submission system.

The corresponding author is responsible for communicating with the editorial office, coordinating revisions, and ensuring that all co-authors are informed of editorial decisions.

Authors must also comply with the journal's authorship criteria and disclosure requirements.

c. Abstract and Keywords

The abstract must provide a concise and accurate overview of the research, including:

  1. The research background or main problem.

  2. The objectives of the study.

  3. The research approach or methodology.

  4. The principal findings.

  5. The main conclusion and scholarly contribution.

The abstract must be understandable independently of the main manuscript and should not contain unsupported claims or information absent from the article.

Keywords must accurately represent the main concepts, variables, or research topics addressed in the manuscript.

Authors are encouraged to select specific, relevant keywords that improve the visibility and discoverability of their articles through academic indexing services.

The abstract length, number of keywords, and formatting requirements must follow the official Ar Rehla article template.

d. Introduction

The introduction should establish the research context, explain the significance of the research problem, and demonstrate the need for the study.

This section should include:

  1. The background and context of the research.

  2. The main research problem or question.

  3. The significance and relevance of the topic.

  4. A critical discussion of relevant previous studies.

  5. The identified research gap.

  6. The originality or expected contribution of the study.

  7. The research objectives.

Authors should explain why the research is necessary and how it contributes to current scholarly discussions.

Arguments must be supported by relevant, reliable, and appropriately cited academic sources.

e. Literature Review

Where required by the article template or research design, the literature review should provide a critical and systematic discussion of relevant theories, concepts, and previous research findings.

This section may include theoretical foundations, conceptual frameworks, research hypotheses, and relevant academic debates.

Authors should critically evaluate existing literature rather than merely reproduce definitions or summarise previous publications.

The literature review should demonstrate how previous studies relate to the present research and clarify the theoretical or conceptual position of the manuscript.

Where the official template does not provide a separate literature review section, relevant theoretical discussion should be integrated into the appropriate manuscript sections.

f. Research Methods

The research methods section must clearly explain the procedures used to investigate the research problem and achieve the study's objectives.

Depending on the research design, this section should provide relevant information concerning:

  1. The research approach and design.

  2. The research setting or context.

  3. The study population, sample, participants, or informants.

  4. The sources and types of research data.

  5. Data collection techniques and procedures.

  6. Research instruments or analytical tools, where applicable.

  7. Data processing and analysis methods.

  8. Procedures for establishing research validity, reliability, credibility, or trustworthiness, where relevant.

  9. Ethical approval, informed consent, and data protection procedures, where required.

For literature-based research, authors must explain the relevant databases or information sources, search strategies, selection criteria, analytical procedures, and methods used to synthesise the literature.

The methods must be described with sufficient clarity and transparency to enable readers and reviewers to assess the scientific validity of the research.

g. Results and Discussion

The results section must present the main research findings objectively, clearly, and systematically.

Results should correspond to the stated research objectives and be supported by appropriate evidence.

Tables, figures, graphs, and other visual materials may be used when they improve the presentation and interpretation of findings.

The discussion should explain the significance and implications of the findings by relating them to relevant theories, concepts, and previous research.

Authors should:

  1. Interpret the main findings in relation to the research questions.

  2. Compare the findings with relevant previous studies.

  3. Explain similarities, differences, and unexpected results.

  4. Discuss the theoretical and practical implications of the findings.

  5. Demonstrate the study's contribution to knowledge in the relevant field.

The discussion should provide meaningful scholarly interpretation rather than simply repeat the findings.

h. Conclusion

The conclusion must provide a clear and concise response to the research objectives or questions.

It should summarise the most important findings and explain their implications for the relevant field of study.

Where appropriate, authors may discuss the limitations of the research and suggest directions for future studies.

The conclusion must be consistent with the findings and discussion and should not introduce new data, evidence, or unsupported claims.

i. References

The reference list must include all sources cited in the manuscript.

Every in-text citation must correspond to a complete reference entry, and every reference entry must be cited in the manuscript.

References must be accurate, traceable, and formatted consistently with the citation style specified in the official Ar Rehla article template.

4. Citation and Reference Requirements

To maintain academic quality and research integrity, Ar Rehla requires authors to observe the following standards:

  1. All ideas, theories, research findings, data, methods, and materials obtained from other sources must be appropriately cited.

  2. References must be relevant to the research topic and obtained from credible academic sources.

  3. Authors are encouraged to prioritise primary scholarly literature, particularly relevant and recent peer-reviewed journal articles.

  4. Citations and references must follow the citation style prescribed in the official Ar Rehla article template.

  5. Authors are encouraged to use reference management software such as Mendeley, Zotero, or EndNote to ensure consistency and accuracy.

  6. Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) or stable URLs should be included where available and required by the citation style.

  7. Authors must verify the accuracy and existence of all cited publications.

  8. Fabricated references, incorrect bibliographic information, and citations to sources that do not support the associated claims are unacceptable.

  9. Excessive self-citation or inappropriate citation practices intended to manipulate citation metrics are prohibited.

Authors bear full responsibility for the accuracy and integrity of all citations and references.

5. Tables, Figures, and Illustrations

Tables, figures, graphs, photographs, maps, and other illustrations must directly support the research findings or arguments.

Authors must observe the following requirements:

  1. Every table and figure must have an appropriate number and an informative title or caption.

  2. All tables and figures must be referred to and explained in the manuscript text.

  3. Information presented in tables and figures must be accurate, relevant, and clearly understandable.

  4. Materials reproduced or adapted from other sources must include appropriate attribution.

  5. Authors must obtain permission to reproduce copyrighted materials whenever required.

  6. Tables and figures must be presented in the appropriate locations within the manuscript unless otherwise specified in the official template.

  7. The formatting, numbering, image quality, and layout must comply with the journal's manuscript template.

  8. Authors must not manipulate images or visual data in ways that misrepresent research findings.

6. Originality and Plagiarism Policy

Ar Rehla is committed to maintaining originality, academic honesty, and integrity in scholarly publishing.

All submitted manuscripts are subject to originality screening using Turnitin before proceeding to the peer-review stage.

The maximum permitted similarity index for manuscripts submitted to Ar Rehla is 20%.

Manuscripts with a similarity index exceeding 20%, following any applicable exclusions used in the editorial screening process, will be rejected in accordance with the journal's plagiarism policy.

A similarity index is a screening indicator and does not, by itself, establish whether plagiarism has occurred. The editorial team will consider the nature of matched content, the accuracy of citations, properly attributed quotations, and the context of textual similarities when assessing originality.

A manuscript with a similarity index of 20% or below may still be rejected if plagiarism, unattributed copying, inappropriate text recycling, or another serious integrity violation is identified.

Authors must ensure that their manuscripts do not contain:

  1. Plagiarism or unattributed use of another person's work.

  2. Inappropriate reuse of previously published material without proper disclosure.

  3. Duplicate or redundant publication.

  4. Fabrication or falsification of research data.

  5. Manipulation of research findings or citations.

  6. Misrepresentation of authorship or scholarly contributions.

Authors are responsible for ensuring that their manuscripts are original and comply with the journal's ethical standards.

All manuscripts submitted to Ar Rehla undergo an initial editorial screening to assess their relevance to the journal's focus and scope, academic quality, originality, formatting compliance, and adherence to publication ethics.

Manuscripts that meet the initial requirements are evaluated through a double-blind peer-review process, in which the identities of authors and reviewers are concealed from one another during peer review.

Eligible manuscripts are normally evaluated by at least two reviewers with relevant academic expertise.

The reviewers assess the manuscript's originality, research methodology, academic contribution, analytical quality, presentation of findings, and compliance with the journal's publication standards.

Editorial decisions may include:

  1. Acceptance.

  2. Minor revision.

  3. Major revision.

  4. Rejection.

Authors receiving revision requests must carefully address the reviewers' comments, revise the manuscript accordingly, and provide clear responses explaining the changes made.

Revised manuscripts may undergo additional editorial assessment or further peer review when necessary.

The final decision regarding manuscript acceptance or rejection rests with the Editor-in-Chief, based on the editorial assessment and peer-review recommendations.
